Saharanpur's carvers work with a toolkit of dozens of chisels, many of them shaped by hand to suit one particular cut. A single floral panel can take a master several days.
Designs are first drawn on paper, pricked along their lines and transferred to the wood with chalk dust. The carver then sets in the outline, lowers the background and models the relief, stopping often to check the light across the surface.
We work with families who have practised this craft for generations, and every carved piece carries their mark.
